I purchased a memory foam topper. I was assured over the phone it was the firmest memory foam they had and very supportive. When I unrolled it I found it had smudges of dried dirt in small patches here and there, and a stain on it. I brushed off the dried dirt to try it out and it was way too soft, "sinking into a hole" and "bottoming out when I sat on it" too soft. I am not heavy only around 136 lbs.
I went to return it, and they said I have to pay return shipping.
I did not find out until attempting to return it that the shipping for the return at the USPS station was $51.15!
The cost of the topper plus shipping and tax was $54.99 + $12.99 S&H + $4.08 tax for a total of $72.06.
By the time I am done paying return shipping, my refund is cancelled out, as they will not refund you the original shipping. They first only gave me a refund of $47.99!
So, I wrote them a letter explaining the topper had dirt and stains on it, and that it did not live up to their claims, basically it was not as described; and sent them a copy of my receipt for the return shipping, and asked if they would cover my return shipping for these reasons, as the FTC recommends it!
And they sent me back an email with an additional $6.98 credit to my account.
Well that is nice, 47.99 + 6.98 = 54.97 which means I was refunded the cost of the topper.
Later on, they sent me an email stating that "I had agreed to pay for the return shipping" after they told me I had to pay for return shipping in the first place! Since when did I agree?
But they did finally agree to refund me the entire original amount I paid which is $ 72.06: the full original cost of the order: ($54.99 + $12.99 S&H + $4.08 tax for a total of $72.06). That was a big relief and I was very grateful!
But I still have to pay to return the topper that had dried dirt and stains on it, and was not as described. $51.15
According to FTC online, and other consumer advocacy groups, online retail mail order companies should NOT charge customers return shipping on items that arrived dirty or stained or are not as described, etc.
Note: It is not bad customer service, as they tried to work it out, and did give me a full refund of the original cost. That part was really helpful. But b/c of the exorbitant cost of return shipping, which I had to pay, I am not all that happy with their return policy.
Consumers be warned: The 3 lb. ViscoSAVER white memory foam is not firm, and DOES NOT DISTRIBUTE YOUR WEIGHT EVENLY as described. If you lay on the topper you immediately sink into a hole or crater. To turn over, you will find a huge bump has been created, b/c the crater you are in has pushed the foam up around you! To turn over, you have to turn over onto the foam bump created by the crater you are in, and wait until the bump gets pushed down by your weight, and you sink into another hole, and another foam bump forms that you have to roll over onto every time you move. So be wary of visco saver foam toppers unless you like them very soft.
The company will work with you to try and resolve any issues, and did offer a full refund of the cost of the topper plus the original cost of having it shipped to me. That is very good customer service. But it is not the best return policy, as you have to pay to have it returned if it is not as described or something is wrong with it.
