I found an excellent online repair manual for washing machines. It is an online book with chapters covering different brands and problems. Click on a chapter that outlines your machine's symptoms and it shows a diagram. Mouse over the diagram and the names of the parts appear and symptoms of a malfunctioning part. It is very helpful because you can call a repairman with an idea of what is the cause and get a cost estimate. Then you can decide if it is worth it to repair the machine or replace it.
